Tour in a New York Context

We will conduct historical research and determine a specific historical moment that we would like to investigate.  An important lesson we learned in Vienna was that the chosen historical moment must be an open wound. That is, a moment of structural turmoil and uncertainty in which one way of life comes to an end and another begins.  It is from a position of imbalance and disorientation that the characters that we develop are born.  It is important that they, like we, are discovering their environment anew.

To conduct this research, we will work with national and municipal archives - both photo and film archives.  We will meet with city historians and neighborhood leaders.

We will develop two specific paths.  Again, a man and a woman.  The characters will emerge from the architecture and the history of these paths  - the streets, bridges, buildings, parks, views, stores, etc - as they reflect the broader historical moment of New York from that time.  We will need to negotiate with storeowners and proprietors of spaces, waiters and restaurant owners among others to secure access to their spaces as well as learn about the specific history of the spaces.

In creating the tour, film and CD we will work with actors and musicians from New York who are able to perform the voices and music that are needed to create the experience for the audience.

And we will further develop the piece.  That is, we would like to lengthen the walk and investigate what the possibilities are once we have two people together in the restaurant.
